A selection of ambient sounds I created for the production:
Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. is a play by Alice Birch inspired by Valerie Solanas’s S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto. It is told over four distinct acts. Each act deals with a different question, choice, or issue facing women today; power or lack thereof, how language casually dismisses or diminishes women, the choice to get married and/or have children, and intergenerational trauma.
Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. is a play about radical feminism and the pitfalls and double edged swords involved with being a woman in today’s world. This play asks us important questions and points out some of the difficult decisions facing modern women and how we view our relationships, both internally and externally, between other women, with men, and with the world.
The design team decided to honor the note in the script that this play should not behave, we wanted to break conventional rules. The ultimate goal of the sound design was to create a sense of chaos and unease that reflected the emotions and actions occurring onstage, as well as help support the setting of the scenes because of the minimalist set.
To achieve a sense of dread and chaos we decided upon using various forms of white noise as our connecting thread between each of the separate acts. White noise is a constant that can get very annoying, yet can still be tuned out, which we felt reflected many of the issues brought up in the play.
